  1. The Netherlands acquired Suriname in 1667 from Britain in
  2. exchange for the New Netherlands (New York).  In 1954 the Dutch
  3. raised the country to a level equal with the Netherlands.  On
  4. November 25, 1975 Suriname became independent.  In February 1982
  5. the National Military Council took control of the government.
